Texturism is defined as the idea that only loose or well defined curls deserve favoring or praise and it manifests in the smallest ways in the natural hair community.
Idolatry: the worship of someone or something other than God as though it were God.
On this week's Hair Talk Tuesday, we discussed Texturism and I talked about my personal stance on it but more important than that, I spoke briefly about how God feels about it and calling it what it is: IDOLATRY!
Now you may be thinking, Zaire how is texturism idolatry and aren't you promoting curl appreciation? Of course, but when one hair type is excluded from that curl/kink appreciation it becomes a problem, and when we start to idolize our hair type and texture it becomes a problem.
All throughout scripture we see how God feels about idolatry and worship.
" Therefore, my dear friends, flee from idolatry." - 1 Corinthians 10:14
" Dear children, keep yourself from idols." - 1 John 5:21
" Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry." -Colossians 3:5
" Gather together and come; assemble, you fugitives from nations. Ignorant are those who carry about idols of wood, who pray to gods that cannot save." - Isaiah 45:20
There are many scriptures that speak about idolatry and God warning us to stay away from these things. But do you know why God warns us and why He tells us to FLEE these things.... it's because they take God's place.
" Thou shalt have no other gods before me." - Exodus 20:3
" I AM the Lord your God, who rescued you from the land of Egypt, the place of your slavery. You must not have any other god but me.
You must not have any other god but me. You must not make for yourself an idol of any kind or an image of anything in the heavens or on the earth or in the sea. You must not bow down on them or worship them, for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God who will not tolerate your affection for any other gods. I lay the sins of the parents upon their children; the entire family is affected-even children in the third and fourth generations of those who reject me. But I lavish unfailing love for a thousand generations on those who love me and obey my commands." - Exodus 20:2-6 NLT
Could you imagine how God feels when we worship things that He created and that He spent his time making instead of worshipping Him? Imagine if you had children and you raised them, and they went and thanked the money that you spent, they thanked the house you lived in, they thanked, praised, worshiped the school they attended and completely disregarded you as their parent. They said you didn't have any involvement in any of their upbringing or birthing, you'd look at them like they lost their mind and you would be angry. They don't bring any glory to you or even say thank you for anything but in the things that you provided for them, and disregard you as though you weren't there. I believe that this is how God feels but eternally deeper.
God created you in His image and in his likeness (Gen. 1:26-27) and He created you for His pleasure (Rev. 4:11, Ephesians 2:1-10, Colossians 1:16). God didn't create us because He was bored or He needed something to do one day so He created us. WE WERE CREATED FOR HIS PLEASURE!
" For we are God's masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago." - Ephesians 2:10 NLT
We are to worship God with our bodies and our hair is included in that. When we place our hair (or anything including gender, race, ability, etc) in God's place and we begin to worship it, we are operating in the Spirit of Idolatry & Pride. We need to repent and turn our hearts back to God so that he can return to his rightful place in our lives. God is Alpha & Omega, God is the one who sacrificed His only begotten Son for our sins. God is the One who put himself into the lowest position one could ever do and WAS BEATEN UNRECOGNIZABLY, HAD TO CARRY HIS OWN CROSS IN THE BURNING HEAT UP A HILL THAT SHOULD HAVE KILLED HIM, WAS HUMILIATED FOR US, WAS TAUNTED BY THE SAME PEOPLE HE CAME TO DIE FOR, HAD THE SINS OF THE WORLD ON HIS SHOULDERS, HAD NAILS PUT INTO HIS HANDS & FEET, HUNG ON THE VERY WOOD HE CREATED, SHED INNOCENT BLOOD FOR US, AND DIED FOR YOU AND ME. Jesus' death was not pretty, it wasn't something to be played with, it was for our reconciliation to God.
For us to worship other things and not God is Sin and it's disrespectful to God. This blog isn't to shame anyone but it is to highlight hidden sin that is easily overlooked and isn't always talked about. Repentance is not shame, condemnation, hatred but repentance is turning from the error that you're walking in and walk in the opposite direction. It's a change in behavior.
" Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour." - 1 Peter 5:8 NLT
This is not a physical battle, but a spiritual one! While it shows up in society, in natural hair groups and communities, it is the devil who plants these seeds and who has planted these seeds and these things are given room to breed and grow because they are not called out. The only way we win spiritual battles is with the Bible. God's Word is the only thing that we can declare over ourselves. Repent, but also begin to declare God's word over your life.
(Psalm 139, John 1:12, Ephesians 1:5, Romans 15:7, Colossians 2:9-10, 1 Corinthians 6:17, Romans 6:6)
Repentance is the activity of reviewing one's actions and feeling contrition or regret for past wrongs, which is accompanied by commitment to and actual actions that show and prove a change for the better. (Wikipedia's definition of the Hebrew word for repentance)
Know that your hair is beautiful in the way that God made it and you were created in the image of Christ. Your natural hair was included in that no matter if its 1k or 6z, God called it very good. 💚
